Pacific Coast Highway Road Trip

Some trips are vacations. Others become stories you’ll think about for years.

My Pacific Coast Highway road trip was one of those journeys.

The adventure began when I landed in Seattle and spent the night before setting out the following morning. Driving south through Washington and into Oregon, I watched the scenery gradually shift from mountain views to peaceful coastal countryside. After stopping for breakfast and crossing an impressive bridge along the way, I continued toward Cannon Beach, where the enormous Haystack Rock rose dramatically from the shoreline.

That evening, I settled into a charming seaside cottage overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It was the perfect place to relax after my first full day on the road and enjoy the quiet beauty of the Oregon coast.

From Cannon Beach, I continued south toward the majestic redwood forests of Northern California. The drive turned into an unexpected adventure when the route took me up and down a mountain—and became even more memorable when I had to stop for a bear crossing the road.

Eventually, I reached the redwoods. Walking among those ancient trees was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of the trip. Their incredible height and age created a world that felt completely removed from everyday life, and standing beneath them offered a humbling reminder of just how extraordinary nature can be.

After exploring the forest, I followed the coast to Fort Bragg and spent the night in another charming retreat. By then, the rhythm of the journey had become part of the experience: wake up somewhere beautiful, get back on the road, and discover what waited around the next bend.

The drive from Fort Bragg to Monterey brought another change of scenery, along with views of San Francisco as I continued south. I arrived in Monterey in time for race day at Laguna Seca. As a motorsports fan, attending the Grand Prix at one of the world’s most iconic road courses was something I had anticipated for a long time. The speed, excitement, and atmosphere made it one of the highlights of the entire journey.

After an exhilarating day at the racetrack, I spent the evening exploring Monterey before returning to a lovely condo with a peaceful wooded patio. It was a welcome place to unwind, and an ideal home base for the final part of my adventure.

The following day began at Fisherman’s Wharf, where I boarded a whale-watching expedition into Monterey Bay. The experience was spectacular. Seeing whales in their natural environment was both humbling and exhilarating, and it quickly became another unforgettable highlight of the trip.

Back on land, I spent the evening browsing Monterey’s shops and sampling the local Mediterranean cuisine. It was a relaxed and enjoyable way to end several days filled with magnificent scenery, unexpected wildlife encounters, and memorable adventures.

All too soon, it was time to return to San Francisco International Airport. I managed to fit in a little sightseeing around the city before my flight and even enjoyed exploring some of the airport’s fun shops, a fitting final bit of wandering before heading home.

Looking back, what I loved most wasn’t any single destination. It was the journey itself: watching the landscape change as I traveled south, discovering charming seaside towns, standing beneath ancient redwoods, encountering a bear on a mountain road, feeling the excitement of Laguna Seca, and watching whales move through Monterey Bay.

For travelers who love scenic drives, dramatic coastlines, magnificent forests, and a little unexpected adventure, this remains one of the most rewarding trips I have ever taken.

It’s a journey I’ll never forget, and one I would gladly take again.
